BENEFITS OF JIU JITSU

Smoothflo Academy

SCARBOROUGH

The Smoothflo Academy is a training facility dedicated to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Yoga and Fitness located in Scarborough UK. We started out our journey on a set of mismatched mats in the squash courts at the rugby club and now many years later we have our own dedicated facility!

We are a Combat Base affiliated club and we opened our current location in Sep 2020 (peak covid!) and managed to pay the bills by offering online classes and receiving amazing support from our founding members, and then by 2021, when full contact training was back on the menu, we were off to the races!

We teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu 7 days a week for adults and offer kids classes from age 4 and upwards as well. All are welcome regardless of fitness level, age, height, weight etc. We truly believe that everybody can benefit from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. We also offer a weekly Yoga class for adults, and a Calisthenics class for kids, to help even more with your overall health and fitness. We’re a small but dedicated team and we look forward to meeting you on to the mats!

Meet Our Coach

Sam Barker

Sam is a Purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was born and raised in Scarborough and started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at age 17. He is now fully dedicated to the progression of Jiu Jitsu and grappling in the Scarborough area, working full time on running and teaching at the Academy.

Sam has had a keen interest in martial arts from a young age and practised in the different combat sport disciplines that Scarborough had to offer before finding his home in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (and never looking back!).

He has competed on some of the highest platforms for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and grappling in the UK including a ‘Fight of the Night’ performance on Grapplefest. He has won the silver medal in the 2021 British Open and has medaled multiple times in the Elite brackets on the northern competition circuit, recently winning gold in the under 67.5kg elite division at the Empire Grappling Northern Open.

David Shaw

David (or ‘Didsy’ as you’ll often hear him called), is a Purple belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He was born and raised in Scarborough and has been training Jiu Jitsu and grappling for the past 20 years!

Didsy has a wealth of knowledge. His history with combat sports goes way back to boxing in his youth before he later found a passion for Jiu Jitsu.

Going on to compete and win in dominating fashion at some of the UKs pioneering Jiu Jitsu and grappling events like ‘Grapple Mania’ as well as winning gold medals more recently at events like the Hereford open – his experience and knowledge of the grappling game as a whole is extensive to say the least!

Andy Krlic

Andy is a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He has lived in Scarborough for the past decade and is the original founder of our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu club having started ‘Combat Base Scarborough’ on a set of mismatched mats in the squash courts of the rugby club and continually supporting the club with his time and expertise ever since.

He has, without a doubt, been a leading role in allowing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and grappling to develop here in the Scarborough area!

Andy started training with the founders of Combat Base UK, Darren and Helen Currie, way back in 2005 in the Pontefract area. He’s competed in MMA and at many Jiu Jitsu and grappling events over the years..

Luke Randell

Luke is a 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu black belt who runs 10th Planet Darlington. We are lucky enough to host him at our Academy once a week and benefit from his sophisticated knowledge of the Nogi ground game.

He is graded under well known Jiu Jitsu innovator Eddie Bravo in the 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu system and has been training in the 10th Planet since around 2005, receiving his black belt in 2020.

Luke has close ties with some of the highest level players in the world of Jiu Jitsu and often passes across techniques which are at the very cutting edge of the grappling game, always staying current and moving with the times.

Ricky Stewart

Although Ricky is a white belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu he is a black belt in all things health and fitness, he runs our Functional Range Conditioning Yoga program and our Kids Callisthenics program also.

Ricky has been into training for sports performance since a young age, originally inspired by his older brother and they have both gone on to have successful careers in the world of fitness. Ricky’s brother working with Professional boxer Dillian White and Ricky himself working with the combat athletes of Scarborough here at the academy!

The Functional Range Conditioning which Ricky teaches is a yoga class which helps to improve your mobility joint by joint. Not only getting you more flexible but also ensuring that you are able to use your newfound range in strength and coordination. This was developed by BJJ black belt Dr Andrea Spina so it is especially relevant to Jiu Jitsu athletes however it can be equally helpful to everyone.

And Callisthenics is all about being able to move better, get stronger and improve your overall fitness for sports through bodyweight exercises

Kids Program

Our kids’ jiu-jitsu program can have several benefits for children. It can teach them self-defense skills and boost their confidence, giving them the tools to protect themselves if necessary. Jiu Jitsu promotes physical fitness and health, helping children to develop strength, endurance, and coordination. Training can also improve discipline and focus, as it requires concentration and attention to detail. Jiu Jitsu can foster a sense of camaraderie and teamwork, as children work together to improve their skills. Jiu Jitsu can be a fun and engaging activity for kids, providing them with an enjoyable and challenging hobby that they can pursue for years to come.

What is Gi & No-Gi ?

Gi jiu-jitsu involves grappling while wearing a traditional uniform called a “gi,” which includes a jacket, pants, and belt. In contrast, no-gi jiu-jitsu is practiced without a gi and typically involves wearing compression shorts or spats and a rashguard. The absence of a gi in no-gi jiu-jitsu means that practitioners rely more on body control and are unable to use certain techniques that involve grabbing onto the gi.
